In this elective, students will learn to engage withoutdoor environments in a more sustainable manner through adopting minimal impact practices. Students will participate in an overnight coastal hike, which will expose them to basic navigation, camping and trangia cooking skills. A local snorkelling day excursion and an opportunity to swim with the dolphins in Port Phillip Bay will enable students to learn about conflicting views over the use of the Mornington Peninsula region.

Students participate in sports that are of a high intensity and competitive in nature, and investigate advanced tactics and strategies. This subject gives students a sound understanding of the different components of fitness and how they apply to performance. Students also undertake a theoretical component that focuses on the areas of muscles and bones, kinesiology, health and skill related components of fitness, and energy systems.

The major focus of this elective is on the following areas:

Fitness – Students will learn how to design a training program and then over the course of the unit work to achieve their personal fitness goals. Students will learn about the different components of fitness and the various methods of training to improve their fitness. This elective should be taken only by students who have a keen interest in personal fitness and the sporting industry.

Sport – Students will participate in a variety of sporting activities and games with an emphasis on learning tactics and working as part of a team. The focus of this unit is on participation, teamwork and sportsmanship behaviour.

This is a female-only elective that has both practical classes and theoretical classes which explore the female perspectives of sport participation, wellbeing, and healthy living. Girls will be able to be physically active in a same-sex class environment and have input into the types of sports they would like to study in further detail. Some of the activities undertaken would include a variety of competitive and non-competitive sports.

This elective should only be taken by students who have an interest in health, sport and personal fitness.

In this full-year elective, students learn first aid skills which culminate in the attainment of the HLTAID011 Provide First Aid certificate.

Students who join the elective will be able to volunteer in administering first aid under adult supervision at certain school events across the year. By enrolment in the St John Ambulance Youth program, students also gain the opportunity to pursue proficiency badges which accrue towards the St John Ambulance Grand Prior's Award.

Be aware that the selection of this elective requires students to complete a St John Ambulance youth enrolment process (they may resign as youth members at the conclusion of the year). They also must attain a USI.
