Year 9 Health & Physical Education Electives

Health and Human Development

In this elective, students will examine the factors affecting nutritional imbalance and subsequent short and long-term consequences. Students will explore behavioural factors that influence current youth health issues, such as; alcohol and illicit drug use, smoking and obesity. Students will also gain an understanding of health promotion and its effectiveness in targeting youth health issues requiring action.

Health and Wellbeing:
Students will learn about the various dimensions of health and wellbeing and how they interact for optimal health and longevity

Mental health and Wellbeing:
Students explore the impacts of mental health and the common mental health conditions that are prevalent amongst society, particularly young adults.

Outdoor and Environmental Studies

In this elective, students will learn to engage withoutdoor environments in a more sustainable manner through adopting minimal impact practices. Students will participate in a coastal walk, which will expose them to basic navigation and trangia cooking skills. Local snorkelling excursions together with the opportunity to swim with the dolphins in Port Phillip Bay will enable students to learn about conflicting views over the use of the Mornington Peninsula region.

Physical Eduction

Students will participate in sports that are of a high intensity, competitive in natureand investigate advanced tactics and strategies. This subject will give students a good understanding of the different components of fitness and how they apply to performance. Students will undertake a theoretical component that focuses on the areas of muscles and bones, kinesiology, health and skill related components of fitness and energy systems.

Sport and Fitness

The major focus of this elective is on the following areas:

Fitness – Students will learn how to design a training program and then over the course of the unit work to achieve their personal fitness goals. Students will learn about the different components of fitness and the various methods of training to improve their fitness. This elective should be taken only by students who have a keen interest in personal fitness and the sporting industry.

Sport – Students will participate in a variety of sporting activities and games with an emphasis on learning tactics and working as part of a team. The focus of this unit is on participation, teamwork and sportsmanship behaviour. 

Surf and Turf

The Surf and Turf program offers an opportunity for students looking for adventure and personal development. Th program runs for the full year and aims to help students develop valuable skills such as motivation, discipline, confidence, perseverance and respect for others.

Surf and Turf program components:

  • Surfing – both practical and theory components
  • Camp – coastal adventure camp (3 days, 2 nights)
  • Volunteer work – working within the local community
  • Environmental Conservation Awareness – theory component

Pre requisites for this elective are:

  • Be a competent swimmer (able to swim 200m without stopping)
  • Willingness to challenge yourself and be an active member of a team
  • An interest in helping others

Approximate cost covering various excursions, transport and camp: $400

Women in Sport

This is a girls-only elective that has both practical classes and theoretical classesthat explore the female perspective of sport participation, wellbeing and healthy living. Girls will be able to be physically active in asame sex class environment and have input into the types of sports they would like to study in further detail. Some of the activities undertaken would include a variety of competitive and non-competitive sports. This elective should only be taken by students who have an interest in health, sport and personal fitness.
