Year 10 Technology Electives
ADVANCED FOOD STUDIES
The Advanced Food Studies course is an introduction to VCE Food Studies and is a semester long subject. Students will explore concepts such as safety and hygiene in the work place, nutrition and health and influences on Australian Cuisine.
Students will experience theory followed by practical sessions that will enforce the concepts learnt. Students will be preparing dishes from a variety of countries that have influenced Australian Cuisine through historical events and immigration.
They will cook dishes from Indigenous Australians, United Kingdom, Italy, France, Greece, Asia and many others. Students will be required to investigate, design, produce and evaluate dishes in line with the Senior Food Studies courses as well as VCAL and VET. Students need to complete a GAT based on hygiene and safety and the design process and the Australian Dietary Guidelines.
ADVANCED INDUSTRIAL PRODUCT DESIGN
Advanced Industrial Product Design provides an opportunity to strengthen your creative and technological expertise in working with a variety of materials to solve a client brief.
You’ll explore the design and development of innovative and sustainable products, and discover how to combine art and science.
You’ll learn to apply skills such as sketching, computer-aided design and manufacturing techniques to strategically plan and design your product in response to your client’s needs.
You communicate your ideas and design, record client interaction and document the development process through a VCE style folio.
This subject leads to VCE Product Design and VCE Systems Engineering.
CAFE CUISINE
Café Cuisine is a semester long elective subject in year 10.
Students explore the topics of Safety and Hygiene with regards to commercial operations in the Food Industry.
Students study and experience the concepts required to run a small business.
Students have the opportunity to sit their Food Handlers Certificate and acquire a Dromana College based Barista Certificate.
Students work in small groups to set up and run a small cafe that caters for staff members at the school.
The food made within our Cafe class is not taken home or eaten at school, but is used to sell in the school Cafe.
Students are required to hygienically and consistently prepare food, prepare a variety of beverages offered in a cafe, serve customers and acquire money handling skills.
To achieve a satisfactory pass in this elective students must complete one Graded Assessment Task (GAT) for the semester based on the intricacies of running a small business, demonstrate their ability to work as a team in a real life cafe situation.
Demonstrate and be competent at preparing and producing a variety of beverages as well as completing an exam that displays their knowledge of the topics explored.
ENGINEERING (SYSTEMS)
Students have the opportunity to learn how electronic and mechanical systems work and the components used to make them. Students will design, build and test various electronic, mechanical and electromechanical projects.
Students will focus on the functions of machines and devices and designing systems to solve particular problems using the systems engineering process.
This subject leads to VCE Systems Engineering
ENGINEERING (WELDING)
Learn some welding and fabrication skills using oxy-acetylene, arc, mig and tig welding equipment. Emphasis will be placed on workshop safety, correct use of hand tools and ancillary equipment. Students will work with various materials, to understand the principles of material properties and manipulation. Students will also have the opportunity to design and construct a model of their choice to implement skills learnt throughout the semester.
This subject leads to VCE Systems Engineering and VCAL VCE Product Design, Projects and VCAL VCE Industry and Enterprise (Business Enterprise).
