MATHS – year 10

Senior School

The Year 10 program is largely elective based. Students will be able to select a program that enhances their interests and strengths while preparing them for future study in Years 11 and 12. Students must study English and Mathematics for the full year.

Year 10 students will choose:

  • At least one elective from the Science Domain
  • At least one elective from the Humanities/Languages Domain
  • At least one elective from the Health and Physical Education Domain
  • At least one elective from the Arts/Technology Domain

Year 10 EXTENSION MATHEMATICS – METHODS

Year 10 Extension Mathematics allows higher achieving students to be well prepared for a Mathematics Methods/Specialist course in Year 11 and 12.

Students will be encouraged to answer more enriched mathematical questions, as well as covering the basics. It is assessed against Victorian Curriculum in the areas of:

  • Number and Algebra
  • Measurement and Geometry
  • Statistics and Probability

Students can also complete Year 11 General Mathematics or Year 11 Maths Methods (consultation with the Mathematics Domain Leader is required) as part of their Year 10 subjects while studying this course.

A CAS calculator is ESSENTIAL for this subject.

Year 10 MATHEMATICS – STANDARD

Year 10 Mathematics caters for a majority of students who want to follow a General Mathematics course in Year 11 and 12.

It is assessed against Victorian Curriculum strands in the areas of:

  • Number and Algebra
  • Measurement and Geometry
  • Statistics and Probability.
A CAS calculator is HIGHLY RECOMMENED for this subject.

Year 10 NUMERACY

Numeracy provides for the continuing mathematical development of students who need mathematical skills to support their other subjects and who may undertake Foundation Maths in Year 11 and 12.

In Numeracy there is a strong emphasis on using mathematics in practical contexts relating to everyday life, recreation, work and study. Students are encouraged to use appropriate technology in all areas of their study. These units will be especially useful for students undertaking VOC Major/VET studies. The areas of study are:

  • Space, Shape and Design
  • Patterns and Number
  • Handling Data
  • Measurement
A Graphics calculator is NOT required for this subject
