VCAL VCE YR 11 STUDIO ARTS
VCAL Studio Art – Unit 1
The VCAL Studio Art unit runs for the whole year for three periods a week.
Students are largely working on producing practical artwork that demonstrates a range of skills and knowledge in a variety of medium. Students are working on a number of Design Processes that follow a theme or topic that will be determined by the teacher.
Student will be able to negotiate their ideas.
Students are required to keep a record of the processes involved and make an assessment on their progress. Students will be shown how to window mount and present their work in a professional manner in preparation for the end of year Senior Art Exhibition.
Assessment for this subject is folio based and is ongoing. Students will need to submit at least three final artworks.
Exploration of Studio Practice and development of artworks. Workbook that contains practical explorations of different mediums, materials and equipment.
Students will research and record their processes and progress in producing art works.
Ideas and styles in artworks – Historical and Cultural – students are comparing two or more artists from different periods. Students need to be able to identify similarities and differences in the way these artists work.
Some SACs will not be assessed until the second semester and will be indicated with a NYC (Not Yet Competent) as the assessment.
VCAL VCE OUTDOOR AND ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES
Outdoor and Environmental studies is a study of the way humans interact with and relate to natural environments. This includes environments that have minimum influence for humans, but may also include environments subject to human intervention. The study is directed towards enabling students to make critically informed comments on questions of environmental sustainability and to understand the importance of environmental health, particularly in local contexts.
Unit 1: Exploring outdoor experiences (Year 11)
This unit examines some of the ways in which humans understand and relate to nature through experiences of outdoor environments. The focus is on individuals and their personal responses to and experiences of outdoor environments.
Unit 2: Discovering outdoor environments (Year 12)
This unit focuses on the characteristics of outdoor environments and different ways of understanding them. Students study nature’s impact on humans, as well as the ecological, social and economic implications of human impact on outdoor environments. Students develop a clear understanding of the impact of technologies and changing human lifestyles on outdoor environments.

VCAL VCE PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Physical Education examines the biological, social and cultural influences on performance and participation in physical activity. Theory and practice are integrated in this study which is approached through both the study of, and participation in, physical activity. Students are encouraged to participate in a wide range of activities including the development of sporting events.
Unit 1: The human body in motion (Year 11)
How does the musculoskeletal system work to produce movement? How does the cardiorespiratory system function at rest and during physical activity?
Unit 2: Physical activity, sport and society (Year 12)
What are the relationships between physical activity, sport, health and society? What are the contemporary issues associated with physical activity and sport?

VCAL VCE YR 11 PRODUCT DESIGN (PROJECTS)
Students undertaking VCAL Design Technology will undertake a year of Product Design Technology and this will contribute to the accreditation of VCE Unit 1 or 2 Product Design Technology.
Unit 1 Product Re-design and Sustainability (Yr 11)
Unit 2 Collaborative Design (Yr 12)
Product Design Technology study encourages students to assume the role of designer maker and develop knowledge and skills to produce effective and creative responses to design challenges. Design and technology focuses on developing an understanding of social, economic and environmental consequences of design choices and decision making. In Semester One VCAL students will undertake a collaborative community based project, whilst Semester Two will give students the opportunity to design and construct their own personal design project.
The program does vary from year to year, meaning that VCAL students can undertake this elective in both Year 11 and Year 12 should they wish.
VCAL VCE PSYCHOLOGY
Psychology is a broad discipline that incorporates both the scientific study of human behaviour through biological, psychological and social perspectives and the systematic application of this knowledge to personal and social circumstances in everyday life. VCAL VCE psychology allows students to explore how people think, feel and behave through a bio-psychosocial approach. The four main broad questions asked in psychology are: How are behaviour and mental processes shaped? How do external factors influence behaviour and mental processes? How does experience affect behaviour and mental processes? How is wellbeing developed and maintained?
This is one of the more challenging VCAL electives and is an excellent subject for students pursuing pathways related to working with people including the areas of: Educational Support, Sports Coaching and Performance, Childcare and Aged care, Healthcare and Community Services.
Unit 1 Introduction to Psychology
In this unit, students investigate the structure and functioning of the human brain and the role it plays in the overall functioning of the human nervous system. Students explore brain plasticity and the influence that brain damage may have on a person’s psychological functioning. They consider the complex nature of psychological development, including situations where psychological development may not occur as expected. Students examine the contribution that classical and contemporary studies have made to an understanding of the human brain and its functions, and to the development of different psychological models and theories used to predict and explain the development of thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
Unit 2 Self and Others
In this unit, students investigate how perception of stimuli enables a person to interact with the world around them and how their perception of stimuli can be distorted. They evaluate the role social cognition plays in a person’s attitudes, perception of themselves and relationships with others. Students explore a variety of factors and contexts that can influence the behaviour of an individual and groups. They examine the contribution that classical and contemporary research has made to the understanding of human perception and why individuals and groups behave in specific ways.

VCAL VCE YR 11&12 FOOD STUDIES
Students complete one unit of VCE Food Studies in Year 11 and one unit in Year 12. Running the course over two years allows students to engage more deeply with the practical elements of the course, whilst still managing to complete the theoretical components.
Unit 1: Food Origins – Year 11
This unit focuses on food from historical and cultural perspectives. Students investigate the origins and roles of food through time and across the world. In Area of Study 1 students explore how humanity has historically sourced its food, examining the general progression from hunter gatherer to rural based agriculture, to today’s urban living and global trade in food. In area study 2 students explore food in Australia with emphasis on immigration and contemporary influences. Students will also be involved in Community Food projects, such as after school soup kitchen, athletics breakfast and school gardening program.
Unit 2: Food Makers – Year 12
In this unit students investigate food in systems in contemporary Australia. Area of Study 1 looks at food processing, product development and food safety in Australia, while Area of Study 2, looks at Australian food in the domestic setting. Student will plan design and evaluate meals. Student will be involved in providing safe, high-quality food that meets the needs of our local community.
