YEAR 7 / 8 PROGRAM
The focus of our Year 7/8 program is on providing students with exposure to a breadth of subjects and learning areas. Dromana College has a strong focus on Literacy and Numeracy, which is reflected across the curriculum; with all subjects undertaking extended timed writing tasks and having an explicit focus on developing students reading comprehension and problem solving skills.
We also recognise that the transition from Primary to Secondary school can be a daunting step and to support all of our students to transition smoothly we adopt a pastoral care approach. All Year 7/8 students have form assembly at the start of each day where they meet with their pastoral care teacher. This teacher is the first point of contact for parents and students and they will likely teach students for a core subject within the timetable. This means that Year 7/8 students are in the same class for all classes except their language elective, and will see one of their main subject teachers at the start of every day.
Dromana College also has a designated Year 7 area that for exclusive Year 7 use during recess and lunchtime. The majority of Year 7 classes will take place in the Year 7 area, with the exception of specialist subjects.
Dromana College operates on a two-week timetable, with form assemble and 4 x 72 minute sessions each day. The two-week cycle encompasses 40 sessions and is broken up as per the table below. Four Art and four Technology subjects are included within the program and students rotate through each of these four electives, completing a semester of each across Year 7 and 8.
